Default What do you believe about Noah and the Flood?

1. I believe the Bible account literally.

2. I believe the Bible account should be taken as close to literally as possible, but maybe the flood didn't cover the whole earth.

3. I believe the Bible account is an embellishment of an actual event that contained many of the aspects of the story. i.e. maybe a large storm wiped out food and some of the area's animals

4. I believe the Bible account is a metaphor that doesn't necessarily correlate with any actual event.

This was my first attempt at a poll. And of course I muffed it up. I thought it was going OK until it told me my options had more than 100 words which apparently dropped the poll entirely.

Wow, your ideas really contradict each other. Not sure how you function... but I'm sure that you are probably at least partially correct with all that you believe.

I'm in the two three range as well, tending toward three. I'm intrigued by the theory that the story may be rooted in the formation of the Black Sea.

The fact that a flood myth is universally held by virtually every culture on earth leads me to believe that the event was not simply a metaphorical one.

As to the exact details, I really don't know. I'm extremely skeptical that all life forms were housed on a single watercraft.

I agree with this. I'm somewhere between 2 and 3 ... maybge a bit closer to 2. The one thing that puzzles me is the concept of the earth being "baptized". #2 does not support that.

But there is no way in hell every species was preserved on that boat.

3.
I operate under the assumption that everything up-to and including Noah is largely allegorical and/or embellished history for the purpose of teaching. Credit or fault the Jesuits for that assumption.
