One important lesson from Mountain Meadows is that sometimes it is your job to tell your priesthood leader "No, I will not do that." And if pressed further, to tell him to stick it where the sun don't shine.
These are rare instances. I've never encountered one in my life. But the day someone tells me to murder women and children, I hope I will be close enough to the Spirit to stand up to the man who is filled with darkness. I wonder how those 75 to 100 men lived with themselves. HighHorse on CB, said his relative who was involved, gathered his family before his death, held out his hands and said "these hands have never shed innocent blood." It is easier to believe that you were God's errand than to believe you are a murderer, is what I take away from that. There are checks and balances in the church. That's why a Bishop has counselors. That's why we have sustainings. Clearly the checks and balances failed at Mountain Meadows. These are my thoughts after watching the piece on MM in the PBS documentary. |
