Default I wonder if ultra-right Mormons

are a little ticked over Romney. His candidacy has lead to more and more invocations of the Church's political neutrality and to endless mentionings of Harry Reid and the fact that Mormons have differing political imperatives.

Seriously, I've never heard so much about Reid's Mormonism.

I think there is a tention there. I think on the one hand many don't view Reid as authentically Mormon because of his political views. On the other hand, they like that he is out there because it points up that there are Mormons of all political flavors and that people need not worry about Romney being a proxy for the First Presidency.

I think the difference is that Reid being a Mormon is not a handicap for him because he is a liberal Democrat and hates Bush. I rarely hear anything about him being a Mormon.

Lately, I'm hearing it all the time.

Harry Reid is the best thing for Mitt's candidacy.

SIEQ, don't you think you're giving too little credit to your co-religionists with differing political beliefs?

I'm not thinking of your basic, rank-and-file conservative Mormon. I'm thinking of those who like to think that their ideas, and only their ideas, are the "correct" ones as far as the Church is concerned.

I'm thinking of the grapevine-esque.

Sure, LDS people who think that their political opinions are divinely sanctioned might be a little ticked that Harry Reid is getting attention as a Mormon.

I do wonder how many of these people are out there. I've been a member my whole life and I go to church between 40 and 50 times a year. I talk politics and sports in the hallway with a lot of ward members. I socialize with them outside of church. In all my interactions and conversations with ward members, I have only met a couple of people who meet your description.

Have you met a lot of this type in the church?

I've met a few, but not too many. When I was a missionary back in 92-94 there was still some of what might be called the "Bo Gritz Effect" in the Salt Lake Valley. LDS members of the Eagle Forum can lean this way. And then there's people who call in to KTKK's programs.
