Mitt Romney is not a political opportunist?
who doesn't change his positions based on what is most likely to get him elected?
can this argument honestly be made? I don't think so. I'm speaking about these so called social issues. Changing your views to get elected is nothing new. I just think its funny that some people try to spin it so that Romney has always been consistent and principle-driven. yeah right. |

Is he a serious candidate? Is he inevitably one of those dogs and cats that drops out after Super Tuesday or does he stand a real chance of winning the nomination? I know Mormons are excited about him but what's the CV?

in an article I read in Time, where they said "the top 3 candidates don't have evangelical creds", he was one of the top 3. The others being McCain and Giuliani. I think McCain is by far the heavy favorite. The guys with money and the corporations will be backing McCain.

I would say he is the most likely to emerge as the nominee. I think McCain and Giuliani have too much baggage. Romney certainly has changed his position on a number of issues, but his positions have been far closer to what evangelicals would support than those of the other two.

What supports your view other than supposition?

I don't think he has "changed" any of his views-- I do think he has not pushed some issues that would conflict with his electorate's wishes. He is anti-abortion, for example, but pledged not to fight that war as governor of a state that didn't want him to. But that's just word play.
I don't think there's such a thing as a politician who is not a political opportunist, by the way.

This article suggests that Romney has in fact changed his views.

Correct. All politicians say and do what is best for their political career. If the public actually thinks politicians care about what the public thinks, the public isn't very bright.
