Default LDS Radar

How well do you trust your intuition when someone seems to be LDS? I was just on a call led by a woman who works in one of our other offices. She is in a different group and I have never met her. During the call, she was talking about some testing that needed to be done, and told a group that they needed to "return and report". I thought to myself, "Huh, she sounds like a Mormon", but figured the term was innocuous enough that anyone could say it.

Five minutes after the call ended, she sent me an IM asking if I were LDS (no, I was not quoting the BofM on the call, my real first name is Teancumhah, or something like that). She told me she was an inactive member. I guess I need to trust my instincts about these things more. My LDS radar is better than I often trust it to be.

No need for radar here in the SLC area.

Mine isn't very good. I just don't think about who is and who isn't LDS.

I don't like the "return and report" phrase used outside the temple. Not b/c of sacrilege or anything like that; it's just so unoriginal and obviously lifted. It's also a pretty conspicuous signaling mechanism for Mormons to identify themselves.

Just say, "get back to me."

In other news, my LDS radar is rock solid. I even pegged a long-haired, pierced, tattooed junkie as a mormon once. Won't tell you how I knew.

It was the Angel Moroni tatooed on his forehead, right?

She was actually surprised when I mentioned it. It was unintentional on her part.

If it was this guy, I'm not giving you too much credit.

LOL. That would be too easy. It was something much more subtle. You'd have to be very perceptive.

It is easy to spot LDS toursits in SoCal.

The most obvious giveaway is the woman...

1. Can you see her garment lines underneath her shirt? Most non-LDS women arent wearing square-neck t shirts underneath their blouse.
2. Is the woman wearing ridiculously long shorts? And sorry ladies, don't give me any of that "capris" crap. There is a reason they are called "capris"....it is because stylish women wore them while vacationing along the Italian Riviera. When a 170 pound woman wears a pair of pleated denim knee-length shorts to Disneyland, she is not channeling her inner Garbo.
3. Is she wearing Crocs (or worse...Tevas)? The only non-LDS women that rock Crocs anywhere beyond just around the house are called "nurses"
4. Count the kids.....more than 2? High probability of being LDS. Or Hispanic.

You can also look at the man...

1. Is he wearing BYU gear? check.
2. Is he wearing Tevas, Crocs, or any other sort of sandal OTHER THAN standard flip flops? Check.
3. Is he carrying a blackberry or cell phone on his belt? Check.
4. Is he rocking his "dressy" stuff at the restaurant.....as in, Aeropostale?
5. Does his t shirt say "Down East Outfitters?"

If necessary, look at how the family behaves as a group...

1. At places like an amusement park, did the family bring a large cooler filled with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? String cheese as a snack?
2. If you are white and with your own wife and children, does the family in question look at you, smile, and act friendly?

I like to toss out "we will go down" every now and then. Also, whenever LDS friends and I are at Chucky Cheese with our kids (this is maybe once or twice a year) I can never refrain from asking one of them if they sell their tokens for money. I know that is all probably sacrilegious but I can't seem to help myself.

Some people think that is funny and some give me crusty looks.
