McCain's only chance
This Wall Street debacle has hit McCain like a tidal wave.
Bush has been president the lase eight years, Bush is a Republican, Bush's administration has proposed an extremely unpopular fix, people perceive Wall Street fat cats bolixed this up, Wall Street fat cats are associated with Republicans, people are clamoring for more regulation, a democratic specialty. It's a massive problem for McCain. McCain can't even debate effectively because this automatically puts him on the defensive, and, frankly, complex financial instruments are not his strong suit. Democrats thrive on catastrophe (their most endearing trait to me), particularly the economic kind. So there's only one glimmer of hope for McCain--the miniscule, infantile attention spans of Americans. Republicans need to make a deal with democrats on the bail out, stop the gargantuan implosions, and try to get this off the front pages in the next couple of weeks.

That would explain the Bolt-like sprint to DC to "save the nation"

McCain's fine. People don't actually want change. The status quo will rule the day.
