Default Houses passes resolution on China 419-1

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll539.xml

Quote:
Calling on the Government of the People’s Republic of China to immediately end abuses of the human rights of its citizens, to cease repression of Tibetan and Uighur citizens, and to end its support for the Government of Sudan and Burma to ensure that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games take place in an atmosphere of freedom
I'll let you guess who the one "nay" vote was.

Cuckoo. Cuckoo. Cuckoo.

Ron Paul would be a foreign relations nightmare.

Yet MRD supported this guy.

That's not something I would admit in public.

"We shouldn't be meddling in the affairs of other countries." Probably what he would say.

But he doesn't hold China to the same standard. He doesn't care if China props up Sudan and Myanmar.

I agree, but the resolution is pointless. If you keep telling your kid "stop hitting your sister" but he never experiences any consequences for that behavior, what is the point in telling him over and over? He just learns he can ignore you. The truth is we don't care enough about human rights to do anything about them, so we issue pointless impotent resolutions (ala the UN) to assuage our guilt and feel like we are doing something. Of course, we might just as well not do anything.

they are not pointless. there was almost an international incident recently over a potential congressional resolution on Turkey.

I concede that rebuking an ally has some impact. Rebuking China has zip.
