Avoiding the NY Times today
The pictures of earthquake devastion in China, including children, flashing over the front page, are horrifying.

Look and learn, buddy. We both live in areas where this could be us at any time.

I have a hard time watching real pictures of children in peril, as in two little almond shaped eyes peering through a narrow opeinging in the rubble.

Don't kid yourself. If the Hayward fault pops at an 8.0 you will see many of the same types of images from northern California. The same would be true in Seattle. I don't mean to suggest that you should ignore the plight of the chinese victims, but you should also make sure you learn from the tragedy and make sure you have done all you can in your home to make it secure, and that you have tried to do as much as possible to make your children's schools, etc., seismically safe, all the while making sure you have life insurance. Be prepared.

I know this is not a revelation - but I noticed almost no rebar in the collapsed concrete buildings in China this week.

Waters, you seem to have it in for the Chinese.

The Chinese have it in for themselves. One child policy, abortion, infantcide, communism, oppression, poisoned food, derelict construction, threats against Taiwan, Tibet, support of the Myanman Junta......etc, etc, etc.

I don't want to imply that massive devastation in the US is impossible, but US structures are light-years beyond Chinese structures in terms of seismic safety. Their codes are far inferior and the codes are largely ignored anyway. Rebar costs money. In many cases, the construction companies simply bribe the inspectors. This is true of the Third World in general.
