Default Obama's church praises Farrakhan

"Last year, it gave the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to a man it said "truly epitomized greatness." That man is Lous Farrakhan."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...d=opinionsbox1

Perhaps the honeymoon with the press (aside from NBC) is over for the junior senator from Illinois.

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

Obama's church is a weakness for him.

So now Mormons are alright with criticizing statements made by a person's church?

Mitt really is in trouble.

If Obama's church believes something out of the mainstream (such as Jesus is black), I have no problem with that. But his church praises a racist. You're upset that your law school is named after a 19th century racist and how that reflects on all of us. Surely a more recent example should give you pause.

I can't help but chuckle a bit at this, because everything you say is true and there is no way anyone can respond to it in the contrary without sounding like a buffoon.

I agree with Cali. Obama didn't praise Farrakhan, he didn't arrange for an award, and he's given absolutely no indication that he's a black nationalist. Why condemn him for the actions of his pastor?

The article doesn't condemn, it just asks that Obama address the issue. Why? I suppose for the same reason it would be required of any other candidate in the same situation.

Such is the road for those that want to be president. I suggest he do it sooner rather than later.

Tis true. Wasn't Bush called upon to delineate his views about race after choosing to speak at Bob Jones University? Or the flying of the Confederate in South Carolina?

Cali's response is perplexing. It's not as though Obama's was church was pronouncing a view on some piece of religious doctrine.

He already did address the issue. He condemned Farrakhan for his racist views towards Jews.

Mormons of all people should be cautious about criticizing others for statements their church has made. You don't have to go back 100 years to find crazy statements from LDS church leaders.

Should Mitt be criticized for the church's position on the ERA? Should that position be ascribed to Mitt? What about the church's position on amending the US Constitution to define marriage? Is Mitt automatically assumed to take that position as well, unless he states to the contrary?

How about exceptionally racist statements from apostles (including J. Reuben Clark as someone correctly brought up)? Does Mitt have to detail that he is opposed to each of them?

Mormons sure have a short memory. It was just a few weeks ago that they were complaining about the media's treatment of Mitt for beliefs promulgated by his church.
