Default Indie Playlist for Kids

For better or worse, our kids do not listen to kiddie music because we don't really expose them to it much. We do not own any Barney CDs or any CDs of little children singing "I've Been Working on the Railroad," mostly because we don't want to listen to it while we drive. When we sing songs with them at night, we will sing stuff from Primary, but we will also sing stuff that they request....usually the music that they have come to know during the rides in the car. It is actually pretty neat to see them get excited about some of the same music I love.

At my wife's request, I put together playlists often and then burn them for her to listen to in the car with the kids. The following is their favorite right now. None of the songs are necessarily new, but they are all uptempo. If you are inclined, check out these songs and see if you like the music. Your little kids will like it and their knowledge will definitely turn heads when you take them to concerts or raves.

If there is interest, I'd be happy to post playlists in the future and would also encourage others to do the same, regardless of genre. I love trying out new playlists in iTunes. I recently did a Best of 2007.....16 different playlist for different occasions.

I wouldn't be opposed to this simply becoming the thread for people to post their playlists when the mood hits.

Also, if you want, just boardmail me and I can just send you the music....to borrow, of course, because giving it to you would be illegal.

The Dudes, Disc 1
Testament To Youth In Verse, The New Pornographers

Sweet, I recognize a handful of songs/groups on there and enjoy most of them. I'll have to give it a shot. I'm always looking for new music to enjoy.

My wife is a big Alicia Keys fan, so the other day we were in the car and her new song comes on. My daughter just turned two and we hear her in the back seat singing:

"No one, No one, No one"

It was pretty funny.

When my son was 2, danimal and I were in line at the DMV. Out of nowhere my son broke out into Pink, "I'm coming out so you better get this party started..."

I grabbed the LDN song by Lily Allen after I saw her perform it on SNL. I can definitely back you up saying that kids love that song.

Here is my favorite playlist. It has withstood the test of time as it was crafted in 2001,

Illustrated Bible Stories for Children, The Weakerthans
Of Up and Coming Monachs, Pedro the Lion
Agnes, Queen of Sorrow, Palace Music
Angeles, Elliott Smith
Easts Last Heart, Songs;Ohia
Deep Talk in the Shallow end, Ben Lee
Stormy Blue, The Cash Brothers
Have You Forgotten, Red House Painters
Weird Wood, Idaho
Weightless, Jackpot
Contrast and Compare, Bright Eyes
I See a Darkness, Johnny Cash
Spy vs. Spy, Portastatic
Poor Young Mans Heart, Kristopher Astrom
She's a Jar, Wilco
Come Pick Me Up, Ryan Adams
Kerosene Hat, Cracker
The Shining(Surf Boy Edit), Badly Drawn Boy

That last track has a few nice lines from the movie Rushmore.
This is a very melodic and super relaxing mix.

Enjoy!

I love the weakerthans. They came down to OC a few years ago and played at a tiny club called Chain Reaction in Anaheim. I think the place holds about 60 people max. It was great.

Pedro is great, too.

this is a nice playlist.

Of that list, I am familiar with only 2:
