Default Why The Poor Remain Poor

Husband and wife don't work. They get food assistance from the church (and who knows what else). They just spent $100 on party decorations for their son's birthday.

And so the cycle continues...

their kids go to crappy public schools because they can't afford to live in affluent school district.

they can't afford health insurance. health catastrophe prevents children from excelling in school.

bad education leads to bleak job prospects.

the cycle continues...

Common thread = kids not to blame?

If so, at what point do they become responsible for breaking the cycle or perpetuating it?

Another axiom which might hold truth for both posters: a poor man is poor because of poor ways.

When they ask for welfare from my taxes.

Kidding, sort of. My point was htat poverty exists becasue of spending/consumoption/allocation issues and becasue of class/status/structural issues.

I used to sell fire alarms door to door and from leads. I once complained to my manager that I was gettign too many leads on the poor side of town. He scolded me, saying that is the most fertile ground for selling door to door becasue poor people don't stay poor by saving their money.

I agree with you. My response was more of a general one, as opposed to aimed directly at you.

Your point implies that the children are not to blame for the poor behavior of their parents. Surely the children are not to blame for socioeconomic issues that are well beyond their control.

But one day, those kids go from 17 to 18 and from being "victims in the system" to "part of the problem."

My question, again, is, how is this conundrum fixed?

It ain't fixed really. It is the downside of capitalism.

It takes money to make money. Exactly how many shares of $700 Google stock can a common person afford? Or how about a $35k/year law school tuition?
