Why does a Mormon need to go to church? Costs a lot to build those churches. Lots of paperwork.

Because organization and structure is what makes the world go round.

I didn't fail to achieve the rank of Eagle. I had no interest or desire to be an Eagle.

I didn't have the best experiences with Scouting when I was young. Maybe I'd feel differently if I had.

Also, I know for a fact that most 16-18 year old girls think Scouting is dorky (especially the uniforms) and I'd just as soon my boys had a date now and then and eventually get married.

I don't want to be Elder's Quorum President in 5 years with a buncha losers in my quorum.

I think the minority are lacking in that. Our Young Men have fathers, priesthood leaders, and Bishops who can fill that role without also having scout masters.

You know what, if my boys were more into scouting, I would be too. But they're not and I'm not. I don't think it's what they need and the boys are more important than the program.

I take it your boys do zero mentoring of the younger boys.

In my ward, the deacons should be mentoring the older boys.

Fair enough.

My scouting experience wasn't the best - my dad was the scoutmaster and I had other interests that were more important to me - and the deal for me was that I could quit scouts as soon as I became an Eagle Scout. I got it just before I turned 14.

The one thing I did take away from scouting was how to set and reach goals. That has been something useful in my entire life.

I just think that parents shouldn't take the scouting program away from the boys because the parents don't like it. I'm not saying that that is what you want, but there are many parents who don't like it because they feel like it is an infringement on their lives rather than considering what the boys want.

I think that is an excellent point.
