The biography is pretty short and a quick read. It is also cheap. So cheap that I got an extra copy and sent it to Jeff Lebowski when he won one of the pick em contests.
One important conclusion I came to was that Brodie was not a true apostate. In my view a true apostate is someone that understands spiritual things, and then turns away from God in emnity. This is not Brodie. She never understood spiritual things. I guess in a way I take comfort in that. Maybe in the great cosmic scheme of things this was her role to play in life. To expand Mormon history, even if she did it in a non-neutral way. Also of note is that Brodie's mother (David O. McKay's sister in law) was not a believer. Interestingly, a certain member of this board has claimed evidence that Brodie had some sort of profound regret about her biography (it is clear there were some regrets from the Bringhurst bio, but this poster suggests more), and that by the end of her life she had more of Mormon-ish spiritual life than she ever admitted. I don't know if this is true, as actual evidence is not forthcoming, but it's mildly interesting to think about. Mormonism is profoundly optimistic about the fate of souls. If Emma can be re-adopted by the faithful, then maybe so too can Brodie. |
