Doing anything for Mardi Gras?
We're having a cajun/creole lunch at work tommorrow. I'm making jambalaya, bringing in some moon pies and wearing an old school Utah Jazz hat (mardi gras colors). Most of my co-workers are faithful Catholic, so they'll be celebrating Fat Tuesday by getting totally hammered, then observing Ash Wednesday and Lent.
I'm especially excited for Lent because McDonalds usually serves a Double Filet O' Fish sandwich for all of March. I realize that most people are repulsed by the thought, but I'm a sucker for McD's. Has anybody been to a real Mardi Gras celebration? I've heard the one in Mobile, Alabama is a blast and very family friendly. |

I'll be busy helping my boys with their science projects that are due at the end of the week.

My wife and I attended Marid Gras in New Orleans (pre-Katriona) a few years back with some friends. We stayed away from Bourbon street (but not all of the Quarter) and had a fabulous time. Bourbon street craziness has really ruined the image of the event which is defintiely family friendaly as -racticed by most of the NO residents. We had a great (and dry) time while there.

I was in New Orleans for a conference back in the late 90's and it happened to coincide with Mardi Gras. We would go out each night and watch the parades. It was incredible. Something you have to experience to appreciate.
One of the things I remember was going over by the French Quarter and there were some preachers up on scaffolding with bullhorns yelling at the sea of humanity pouring towards the French Quarter, telling them that they were going into the bowels of hell and that they should turn back immediately. And in all that time I only saw a couple of women earn their beads. But I have never seen so many people dead drunk in my life.

A few years ago my birthday fell on Mardi Gras. We went out to dinner to celebrate my birthday. As best as we could tell our fellow diners had started drinking oh, say, around 11 that morning. It made for an entertaining birthday.
