Hezbollah ain't a state. Israel is a state. The standards of conduct are higher for states that want to belong to the civilized, peaceful world. If they want to have the possibility of living in peace they have to get rid of Hezbollah and get Hamas to knock it off. So how can they do this without doing what they have done? They can use the tools that exist around them. They could have used the organs of the UN. They could have helped establish a stronger, more sympathetic government in Lebanon. They could have allowed the status quo to persist as they had for quite some time. Indeed, this appears to the outside eye to be Olmert proving his toughness to the detriment of Israels future.
What about this current approach is any different than what has been going on for the past 40 years? Nothing. The terrorists will not be disarmed, they have probably destroyed a potential ally in getting Hezbollah disarmed in a democratic Lebanese government, and they have violated all kinds of international law in order to do so. There actions are understandable, but very shortsighted. Let the extremists choke on their own stupid ideas, as they are exposed for the idiots they are, don't push people into their camp by attacking and killing civilians. |
