Why not? Did Joseph reveal all that was necessary to reveal, and then upon his death, the spigot shut off? Why did the contents of the D&C essentially stop once Joseph died?

Whether you believe him or not, Joseph was a religious genius who was willing to go out on a limb. He had no fear of going about making claims such as the origins of Zelph and the Abrahamic papyri. I have a hard time imagining President Monson coming across a rusted sword and unequivocally stating that this was a sword used by a Nephite warrior. We're much more circumspect and cautious in deliberating the revelations that are "revealed" today. GBH's interview with Larry King shows how cautious we are in making claims that seem outlandish to the mainstream.
