Under those circumstances, what's the difference between a faith promoting historian and an apologist? To me, the Packer line is "we don't need historians, we need apologists."

The need to lie and the existence of a well paying market for flowery lies, and honors heaped upon the liars just speaks volumes about a culture. It says it all.
