I agree completely. What's wrong with only asking "Are you worthy to attend the temple?"? (I assume that's the one question you're referring to). If the interviewee wants to discuss more than that, he/she is free to do so.

I once simply stated the questions in order before he could ask them and repeated them verbatim with the stock answer.
I don't recall that ever happening - it's been several years since I was in the Bishopric.

This is an interesting discussion and has caused me to think back on my interviews. Most of course were renewal interviews in which I just answered the questions. I am sure in the honesty question I have said, I think I am and try to be. Fortunately I have never been quizzed on this because I will admit I have told some of the,"oh, you look just fine" type white lies.

On those few occasions where I really needed to make sure I passed the interview, like when a wedding I needed to attend was coming up, I made sure my answers were what the interviewer was looking for. A lot of "absolutely" and "without question" type answers.

Only once did the interviewer go into depth on my answer. It concerned tithing and was back in the mid 70's. I answered yes and was asked if I pay on gross or net. I said net and the response was, that isn't a full tithing, gross is. I won't go into the details of how it ended. I did later discuss it with my Bishop and he said, "well brother........ (1st councilor in SP) is self employed. He writes off everyting he does as an expense. Maybe he defines "gross" different than you do.

They still put locks on the lockers inside the temple, no?

Not sure what you're trying to say.

The SP counselor appeared to want the "right" answer not the real answer.

Some people need a little encouragement to be fully honest.

I guess I'm still missing what you're saying. People know that honesty is part of being a good person and temple worthy. Therefore one question of "Are you worthy to attend the temple?" is all that's necessary; asking them if they're honest in their dealings doesn't make any difference in the end (needing locks on the temple lockers is proof of that).

Asking the question helps to remind a person what it means to be temple worthy.

This thread has reminded me of an interview I had years ago when I gave the nuanced answer of "I sure hope so" to the final question. The counselor in the SP looked a bit annoyed (a bit at most) and said "I think you've been in the church long enough to know what we mean by that question." I think he was right, and that was the last time I answered a question in that manner.
