Maybe they were following Joseph's first account of the First Vision, which was that he saw one being.

One purpose. Pretty sure that is how it was explained to me when it shows up in the Book of Mormon somewhere.

I must have missed that one. He didn't see two personages or he changed his account later in life?

You could Google it but you'll start hitting anti-Mormon sites. It's in one of the first few chapters of Bushman's biography of JS, "Rough Stone Rolling", I think chapter 2.

When you say "Huh?", I imagine your internal reaction is similar to what mine was, which was, "Why am I only finding this out at age 35?!".
