And even with the sacramental prayers, if a kid has botched it twice already I think it's best to let it go and work on it with him afterward. There's no sense in ruining his self-confidence, making him read it 16 times.

Amen to that.

Our bishop used to be a hard-liner. It got to where many of the priests wouldn't come to sacrament meeting for fear of the embarrassment. The former YM pres had a chat with him and he lightened up. Things are good now.

One time, we had a new priest (when I was a teacher) who couldn't get it right. Tried maybe 4 or 5 times. Nervous as all get-out. So, the wise experienced older priest (who would later be arrested for arson in the high school, but that's another story), then whispered the words, and he was able to finish it.

Disaster averted.

Unfortunately, his family (converts, one of those rare whole-family convert situations) later went completely inactive. O.J. Pacheco. We miss you man.

I don't quite understand how it can be botched, but I have seen the same kid week after week struggle. You have the words right there on the card.

It's hard for some kids who don't ever read, when they are very nervous, to go from one line to the next.

I've had this same kid read scriptures in class, and he never gets those right either.

I remember sitting with my family in sacrament meeting as a young teenager and listening to one of my friend's older brother do it about ten times. My dad had been the bishop of that ward in the recent past. I remember after the sacrament he leaned over to me and said "you may be a Bishop some day, if you are remember that while the sacrament prayer is important, the boy is infinitely more important."

I'm pretty sure he has made that comment at other points but that is the time that stuck out to me. Forgive me if I've shared that before.

UtahDan, I understand the point. But in some ways isn't this the same "everyone gets a trophy" mantra that is so common these days?

Do it right. Do it right now. No excuses.

Who is holding kids to any standards?

Who are the teachers that keep passing my priest who can barely read? maybe they think they are valuing the boy by passing. I'm not so sure.

Mike, you're a hardliner. I sometimes wonder if it's the same person posting in religion and politics.

I'm a hardliner in that I refuse to baby people. I have high expectations and I want people to know that.

Didn't bring food on the campout? Eat grass. That's your problem. I hope you learned something about preparing.

I'm trying to mold boys into men.

People talk about how tough it is to camp. My last 15 months on my mission were camping.

I feel like I am the last generation that wasn't pampered. We had jungle gyms, teeter-totters, human-powered merry-go-rounds, we (EVERYONE) bobbed for apples, we didn't give a f*** about razorblades in our candy, we roamed outside on our bikes at the age of 5.

So yes, I guess I am a hardliner.
