Never bet with God against His University.

I suppose you could say I was once a Ute Fan. I grew up in Kaysville and was way into sports, always looking for a local connection that made national news. I remember reading about Larry Wilson and took great pride that he was from the University of UTAH.
As I entered puberty I was really looking for some connection. Jerry Pimm and his Utes were doing pretty well, so they became my team. I followed them religiously. The pinnacle was when my father took me and my brother to the Utah-Arizona game at what was then called the Special Events Center. Arizona was ranked in the top 20 and Utah was taking it to them (Jonas, Judkins, and the gang). I was standing yelling "UTAH, UTAH, UTAH" at the top of my lungs with all the other Ute Fans. Sadly, the game was interrupted by a bomb scare with less than a minute to go. We all exited the building, waited for the all clear, and came back for more fun only to have Arizona refuse to come back on the court. Game over. What a great night. At the same time I became a huge BYU football fan. Lavell had things going with Gary Sheide and they were stirring things up. I remember attending the final BYU-ASU game in Provo before ASU left for the PAC 10. More yelling, this time "BYU, BYU, BYU." I was hooked. Ute basketball remained strong, but not as strong as BYU football became (and at the same time, BYU made some national basketball noise). My allegiance eventually coalesced around BYU athletics and has remained so from that time. Ute Fans, put away your hopes and hankies. I'm not coming back. Time to move on.

My father and all of my older brothers attended the U.
I grew up sitting in the GA section at football games or the student section with my oldest bro. When Utah went to the Freedom Bowl and lost a close one to USC we all drove down together. I have fond memories of sitting in the black, North end zone as a kid as well as watching students throw snowballs at the BYU players and their bench (funny, but low). I remember watching Marshall Faulk break some amazing runs and then going to the Pi afterwards and thinking it was the coolest thing. Going to the Huntsman center to watch an NIT game against Rhode Island (I think) and being ticked when they had a horrible second half against Kentucky in the NCAA championship. Funny, I just noticed that I have a lot of memories from my childhood of losses! I've been a fan since I was a little kid, but unlike some Utah fans, I have nothing but respect for Brigham Young University. Sure, I hope you guys lose sometimes as a rival fan, but I wouldn't hesitate for one second to send one of my kids to either school (as long as they still bled red when they had graduated). It's a great rivalry, despite some of the more idiotic and ignorant fans who seem to perpetuate the negative stereotypes (See: pirate ship, drunk Ute fans, self-righteous/holier-than-thou Zoobies, and I-believe-that-Provo, Utah-is-the-center-of-the-earth BYU fans). |

All the time. There are several folks each game that wander down to stare at it and we have them climb aboard and act silly. Kids have the most fun on it, as there is a bell they can ring to bring attention to themselves.
