This weekend we blessed our baby in church. I am not one for the standard Mormon speak in blessings. So in my blessing to my Son, I blessed him to have the desire to learn to read, study math, science, and literature. All my friends were there, and totally mocked me after the fact. We had a good laugh about it, but I still stick to my guns that I would rather bless him to receive practical things than some of the other things I hear people say. I feel like a lot of times people give blessing for the audience rather than the individual. I was going to bless him to hit a 95 mph fastball, and pick up hot chicks, but I thought that might take it a little far.
Then I actually shared my testimony. (which I never do) I stated the following, among other things: "The bureaucracy of the Church kind of wears me out.... but I am very thankful for the Gospel, and the truth it brings into my life." Oh man, my friends had a field day with that. They couldn't believe I would say that in Sacrament. They though it was hilarious. Thinking back, I guess it was a little to honest, but the Church itself does wear me down. I still love the teachings, but the whole organization kills me sometimes. When I share things, I have to tell the truth. Sometimes I say to much though. I guess that was one of those times. |

there is never anything wrong with being sincere and honest, even if it's not culturally the norm.
I don't remember the bureacracy statement. However I did note in your blessing that you didn't mention social studies. It's underrated, you know. I think my last baby blessing was about 45 seconds long, and I blessed my daughter to be a good person, be charitable, serve others, amen. No one gave me guff, except for my wife, who said it was a little short. But I don't care. |

Three thoughts:
1. Good for you. I'd like to hear something like that sometime. It's different and still counts. 2. It sounds like your friends are Mormons of the sheep variety. There's really nothing wrong with that per se, but if they were serious about giving you a hard time, you should remind them about vein repetitions. 3. There is absolutely nothing inappropriate about blessing your son to be able to hit a 95 mph fastball. After all, if there is any sport that is played in the hereafter, it is baseball. After all, as Red Smith said "90 feet between bases is as close to perfection as man has ever come."

There was a guy in my homeward growing up who is a friend of the family, and gave a very biblical kind of baby blessing, using language such as "stick of" and "rod of" and all sorts of language like that. He had violated cultural norms, but not in anyway that was wrong, per se. But you kind of got the impression, after the blessing, that he expected his son to be a prophet someday.

Very similar to my youngest's blessing. Just cover the basics and your child is good to go.

QUOTE] They weren't serious, they were just giving me a hard time. They are definitely not the sheep variety, which is why we get along so well. This was one of my points about the bureaucracy of the church. I think most of us get worn out by the way people act at church compared to the way they really are. After reading this board, and CB, I feel like there are a lot of other people out there who feel the same. I am not talking about living the commandments. Rather, I am speaking of those who speak openly, and have opinions that may differ from the majority. Although my friends gave me a hard time, they were joking with me because they knew it was truly how I felt. I have this problem where I can't be fake. If I don't like you, I can't hide it. (I wish I could fake it a little more in that area.) |
