If the boards did not exist...
If CB, CG, CougarBlue, TBS, UFN, Utezone, etc...did not exist, would you find it easier to cheer for your rival in the non conference games?
How much of your opinion of the rival team is derrived from the fans, or from your board expereinces with other "fans" (as Rocky puts it)? Do you find yourself cheering against the Utes (or Cougars for some) because you don't want to have to read about it the following week? Thoughts?

I hear ya. It's hard to shake the hate sometimes...maybe the boards just help things "jump up a notch." Or, everyone has that guy at church that's either the Ute fan or Cougar fan...and that's always a good time.

If anything, I think message boards may have made me more sympathetic to Ute fans. This is really the only board that I have ever followed and there are very few, if any, Ute fans that are pricks that hang out here.
It kind of takes the fun out of it, I suppose. Its hard to hate the enemy when you consider some of them your "friends", in a weird cyber-net, never-met-them-before-and-probably-never-will, sort of way. |

I confess
I've watched the last minute of a Utah or BYU game before and caught myself thinking about what the boards would say.
It wasn't easy opening CB the morning after last year's game. One thing to consider: It wouldn't be real hard to read the boards after a tough loss if one hadn't said a lot of over-the-top things in the week prior to the game. |

I despise BYU a little less because of the boards. Probably because BYU fans are a little humanized.

a. went to home BYU-Utah games and despised the U fans there who seemed to always be confrontational, foul-mouthed, arrogant jerks picking fights, displaying anti-LDS behavior and what not b. worked in Salt Lake and Ute fan stereotype was reinforced by the majority of Ute fans I worked with, being anti-LDS, goatee wearing jerks c. Ute fans I interacted with on CB like SeattleUte and TopUte seemed to reinforce this Lately it's been more difficult for me to hate the Utes as I've become very good friends with a Ute fan who's a salt of the earth guy, and hard to admit but most all the Ute fans here are really decent guys (SeattleUte obvious exception). Board reaction after a win or loss of rival means next to nothing. It does pain me reading Ute fans taunt Cougar fans after our loss, though. Last edited by jay santos; 08-22-2007 at 08:42 PM. |

I never hated Utah as my brothers attended there. However, I agree the boards have humanized my rival, where except during rivalry, I actually like the Utes.

I almost always root for the Utes when they are not playing the Cougars, because I have familial feelings for them as an in-stater. Being on the boards has made me a little more edgy because I don't like all the stereotyping (which goes both ways).
