My point is that I'd be a better bishop than a counselor.

Because a counselor actually gets out there, attends with the auxiliaries, sits down with their presidencies, calls people, follows up on callings etc.

The counselors are where the rubber hits the road.

The Bishops' main "weight" comes from having to deal with the spiritual problems and temporal problems of the members, dealth with on a personal basis.

Not that I'd be good at this.

A little more than that don't you think?

You have to be perceived as one towing the line, responsible, usually well liked within the ward, be generally good with people, be perceived as having a good family, have some ability at counseling people.

If you stay in your ward, you might be one of the few options. Get thee to a rich ward, and you can evade observation. In our ward, we have more high priests than elders, and more former bishops, high councilmen and stake leaders than I can count.

I'm acutely aware of this.

But at the same time, I feel that people that are always trying to duck responsibility aren't doing themselves or their families any favors.

We've had people leave our ward to duck callings, and I don't look upon them highly.

I guess it gets down to the meaning of "good". I start with the premise that every Bishop is a "good" Bishop. Sure there are some that go astray, but to be a Bishop I think the qualificationsneeded is that you are "good".

Are some Bishops better than others. I guess since we are dealing with humans, that would have to be the case. That is where those things you mentioned would come into play.

Well don't complain if and when you're called as bishop.

I've never moved to duck a calling, but have chosen to live in nice surroundings, i.e., a good neighborhood with great schools. We've always selected our neighborhoods with education in mind. That usually translates into a nicer ward. We've lived in two resident wards, since law school, more than twenty years ago. As luck would have it, these wards are loaded with leaders and I haven't had to duck callings which are better bestowed upon others.

Do you stay in a crappy school district to appease your moral sensibilities or do you do what's best for your children?

As for us, we did what was best for the children.

we may move in the next year to get out of our school district. however it is possible to move school districts and still be in our ward. live just north of White Rock Lake, where I cycle.
