Default vino & Kloden both injured

Vino is apparently cut pretty badly on both knees. I would guess he will suit up but it could be an impediment to his climbing over the next few days.

Kloden has a hairline fracture of his tailbone. Ouch. I wonder if the doctor suggested htat he go sit on a racing saddle for the next two weeks as a way to help it heal. It would not shock me to see him quit.

ANybody read any more updates on this situation?

I read the same stuff that you did. I would imagine that Kloden will be a start time decision tomorrow, but I wouldn't be suprised at all to see him pull out either before or shortly into fridays stage.

I'm still trying to figure out how he could get one of those big inflatable donuts onto his seat. Do they allow recumbents in the tour? A nice big cushy 16" donut would fit nicely on one of those seats.

I know it happens every year, but I hate to see an injury affect the leaderboard, especially this early in the race.

I'm bummed about both of these guys being hurt but since finding out that Kloden just turned 37 I've been rooting for him a little bit. I figure if he's still at the top of his game then I'm not old either! My guess is he'll ride anyway and surprise us all with how he tolerates the pain. These guys can suffer like nobody else can.

Oh, and sweet avatar goose.

Did I hear that correctly? They said the sprint to the finish came in at 78.9 kph. Is that possible? Thats something like 48 or 49 mph. I didn't think that was possible on a flat road, unless you happen to be from Indiana and on a certain Cutters racing team.

I would ahve to look at Sheldon Brown's gear calculator but can you pedal that fast without spinning out? Our tandem, with sort of mountain gear ratios, spins out at about 37-39 mph.

Kloden and Vino are both riding today but Kloden doesn't look too happy about it.

I saw that also and couldn't believe you could go that fast on the flats.

I feel for Kloden. Last year I took a spill on my mountain bike and cracked my tail bone. It actually felt better on a bike than even walking but it took three to four weeks for all the pain to disappear.

According to Sheldon Brown's calculator, a 54 chain ring and an 11 rear gear on 170 mm cranks at 120 RPM will put you at 74.4 kph.
