Statman is not paying attention. My calculations were based on the assumption that the 2.36 seconds were from the time that the ball left his hand until it hit the ground (I later learned that it hit him on the head on the way down). My calculations are correct based on that assumption. Statman's calculations (same as what ERCougar posted) assumed that the 2.36 seconds were from the time that the ball left his hand until it hit him on the head.

Listen Poindexter, you can't just throw the initial height into the equation like that unless the final height is the same as the initial height! The equation you are using only applies until the ball gets back down to the helmet height. You then use a different form of the equation for the remaining distance from the helmet down to the ground. The problem is, you don't know a priori how much of the 2.36 seconds is spent on each of the parts of the path. Hence the dual equations with dual unknowns and the use of an iterative solver.

Uh...yeah you can. That's why the initial height is an element of the equation. If the initial height were assumed to be the same as the final height, it wouldn't be necessary to include it, right?
