President Hinckley mentioned that Joseph Smith was arrested on trumped up charges before being jailed and murdered in Carthage. My understanding was that Joseph was arrested because he smashed a printing press being run by dissenters in Nauvoo. Is this really a trumped up charge? Or is it other charges that were the so-called meat of the case?

Like all groups we like to couch our history in favorable terms.

I don't know if the charges were "trumped" or not. And yes it did involve destruction of a printing press.

I didn't hear any mention today of Joseph firing off a couple of shots. I did hear the before and the after however.

Not that I have a problem with not mentioning it. It just shows we like to shade our presentation.

It is interesting that the part about the printing press never makes it into the seminary manuals.
