Default Woods and Federer

I had to laugh a bit when I heard yesterday that Tiger Woods was sitting in Federer's box during Rogers victory. Why? I am enthralled with every Tiger Woods performance yet am completely uninterested when it comes to Roger Federer. I'll admit that I give Tiger all the credit when he mows down his competion. When Federer does the same thing, I chalk it up to a lack of depth in the tennis world. In short, I had to laugh because I think it is possible that Tiger Woods has single handedly killed tennis (or at least US tennis), but there he sits in Roger's VIP seat.

With this month's retirement of Andre Agassi, I now officially could care less about any tennis player. Has Tiger ensured that they youngsters who once would have played tennis at Dad's country club now only want to golf? In 1990, you couldn't have paid me to sit and watch a golf tournament but I loved watching the tennis slams. By 1997 I couldn't wait to watch Woods play. If he was still in it, I was watching. Now, as the 2007 tennis Grand Slams approach, you couldn't pay me to watch them. You'll find me watching all of golf's Major's. For me, it has everything to do with Woods. I don't think I'm the exception.

Tiger is golf's cash/ratings cow. People love the guy - it's certainly easy to love watching him play - and it's been proven time and again that tournament ratings are higher when Tiger makes the cut.

I've always loved watching golf. If I had to pick a favorite player, it would be either Fred Couples or Davis Love III. I like Tiger but I usually find myself rooting for whomever he is playing with on Sunday for no other reason than seeing somebody else win.

I hear you. I root for Tiger because I feel like I'm getting my chance to see the best to ever play. May not be true in the end, but it keeps me interested.

On the flip side, I can't hardly name any up and coming American tennis players. I know Roddick and Blake and that about wraps it up for me.
