Missionaries usually don't get bored, but imagine this.

You are late teens to early thirties, not allowed to date, cooped up with another guy not of your selection, and asked to do something which is fulfilling, yet often tedious, demanding and not infrequently disappointing.

The 17 year old in me wants to say that it sounds like a break from a rigorous routine and would welcome it.

The adult in me will try to sympathize a little but would discourage something like that.

Yup. My son just sent his last four months of photos home from his mission and it included shots of a cerremonial burnign of one of the ugliest ties I have ever seen. And it was done in what I considered a stupid and unsafe manner. He's 20.

A misisonary from my ward dropped molten polyester on his bare foot when burning his tie. He sustained 3rd-degree burns and ended up coming home early on a medical release. Lots of tragi-comic elements in that story.

(He was one of my former Scouts, an Eagle to boot. I never should have given him that Fireman's Chit.)

Ah, the Fireman's Chit. The bane of every Scoutmaster.

Our mission had a slightly different tradition: burn a tie at 6 months, a shirt at 12, and an entire suit at 18. I didn't participate, but I had a companion who dutifully burned a suit on the appointed day.
