Default Do any of you participate in your weekly crits?

I don't, too far away and too early in the day.

We've got an informal weekly "road race", but no crits. Its basically the fast guys in town that get together and hammer for about 40 miles for the glory of being the ultimate fast guy for a week.

And no, I don't go. Its every wednesday across town at 5:00pm and there is really no way I could make it there after work in time. Plus, that is mutual night at the church. Plus plus, that takes a big chunk out of precious kid time before they go to bed at 8:00.

Crashes, accidents and lots high octane pain.

You should wait at least one year before considering it.

More accurately, IMO, you should TRAIN for at least one year before considering it.

At this point, it doesn't sound like anything I'm interested in. I'm a pretty competitive person, but with cycling, I'm more interested in competing with myself and getting stronger so I can ride longer and climb better, etc.

what's the average distance of a crit? Is it like a mile course that's they do a bunch of laps on?

To be a legitimate crit, you need to have a course of at least one half mile and not longer than one and one half miles. It must have at least four right turns and one left turns. Now many crits play fast and loose with these rules, but many, many bike racers only race crits.

It's extremely fast paced, frequently too fast for me, and dangerous until you get the hang of it. It requires extraordinary bike handling skills. They are fun because nothing is more exhilirating that being in the sprint at the end, but getting there is the tough part.
