Default Involuntary Tithing

A co-worker of mine just took a job with the church. I asked him if it was true that the church deducts tithing automatically. He said they did. Do you think he will get the same blessings as someone who actually has a choice? It seems like by taking the choice and temptation not to pay from him, they are also removing at least a portion of the blessings.

I am calling BS on this one.

No way. There would be no way for them to account for such an automatic deduction. Also, the notion seems insane.

One possible option would be that the employees, upon hire, opt to have the employer automatically deduct x amount of income, a la a 401K contribution. This type of deduction would have to be post-tax. technically, I could see that happening. But if it were voluntary, then your post isnt very interesting.

I am only going off what he said. Are there any church employees here that can confirm?

I just checked with two of my friends that work for the church. Both denied it.

That's good. He doesn't start his new job until Monday. I wonder what would give him the impression that his tithing would be automatically deducted. Maybe they told him that tithing was a requirement (as is being temple worthy) and he took it to mean they were going to deduct his tithing. He was actually pretty stoked about not having to write another check out.

From a friend who has worked in the Church Office Building for the past 7 years:

Quote:
SOOOOO FALSE! HUUUUUGE RUMOR!

I have to pay my own tithing. The point of tithing is not giving the Church your money, it’s making the sacrifice and doing the work – writing the check and filling out the form to your ward, and being accountable to your Bishop.

I give to United Way and the Church deducts that. I have a bus pass, the Church autodeducts my part. The Church will never autodeduct our tithing.
