I witnessed innumerable Honor Code violations (I lived with football players the first two years at BYU) and never ratted out anyone.

I think we should be clear about exactly what the honor code is: Ernie Wilkinson's misguided attempt to eliminate hippies and hippy culture from the school via draconian means. Completely outdated now. The HCO reminds me nothing so much as the SS during WWII.

And in spite of the HCO, you can find anything at BYU you can find at a place like CU - sex (hetero and homo), boozing, drugs, you name it. It may be a little bit less prevalent, but it's there - and deeply underground. Sinners now have yet another reason not to confess to the proper authority or otherwise come clean about their misdeeds.

For the record, I was a complete straight arrow, save one night I fell asleep on my fiance's couch until 1:35 am on a Friday night on accident.

With that said, my HCO stories:

Story #1 - My sister was in Heritage Halls and was determined to be a good rule keeper. She loved incense, but knew you couldn't burn stuff in the apartment, so she (I kid you not) would burn it in her car. Her Draper-raised roommates couldn't tell the difference between Vanillaroma and Mary Jane, and reported her. My sis explained that one away with no consequences, but got bitter towards the entire idea, started hating the school and the church, became a classic feminist iconoclast, and is now an alcoholic.

Story #2 - While my fiance and I were trying to find a music site on the computers in the library, a bunch of nasty hardcore porn pop-ups started appearing. For every one I closed, two more would pop up. Eventually I had to do a hard reset of the computer. I was so scared that the HCO had monitored everything I did and was spying on my surfing habits that I preempted them by reporting myself. True story.

My sister was reported to the HCO by a peeping tom while she lived at Heritage.

Apparently her roommate had some guy in their apartment till 12:05 AM, and they saw a strange man peer into the window. The next day they all got called into the honor code office.

I apologize if it offends you, but that is hilarious.

Were there any repercussions heaped upon the peeper?

Good for you. I'm not certain if I witnessed them or simply went about my business, and ignored them. Well maybe one roommate, but eventually he changed and served an honorable mission. So my patience was rewarded.

I knew of 4 girls all roommates, that we used to hang out with quite a bit, when ever the "recess lady" would come around we would hide in the closets and stay well passed midnight. Most weekends we would actually sleep over at their apartment. Since i wasnt a BYU student i was ok but all 4 girls were students.

Well one night a girl in the apartment across the hall saw us leaving at like 7 in the morning, while she was walking her boyfriend to the car. She reported the girls, when they asked her about her boyfriend being there she said he came over for breakfast (which was complete BS).

The 4 girls were all put on probation, 1 of the roommates we never even talked to but because she didnt prevent it or report it, she also got in trouble.

The honorcode office is gay.

As I have said many times if they want the honor code and want to enforce it the way they do, that is fine. They are in charge and people have the choice to go or not go and abide by it.

It does bug me though to hear people praise it as being something it isn't. Some kind of spiritual wonderful thing that sets BYU students apart and above everyone else. It would be wonderful if they lived it as a code without being under duress to do so. I will bet there is less adultery in Iran than the US. I just heard some guy got stoned to death the other day for committing adultery.

Bottom line it is a great way to control people. Heck, there are probably a lot of people in the US who would give up a lot of civil rights in order to have more control over people.

I remember President Samuelson mentioned some lady cornered him and was upset that her daughter was allowed to wear a low cut dress on campus. He felt bad and said they (BYU) need to be more diligent.

I would have said, heck Lady, you raised your daughter. You raised her to come here and act like a slut and now you expect us to baby sit her for you.

They're fine as long as they don't act on their gay urges.

Are they allowed to be in guys dorms past curfew. Seems like they get special treatment if they can be in a guys dorm past 12 but a co-ed can't.
