What's up with Arkansas and Tennessee? Palin? Hard to imagine why a state would shift that much to the Republican side after the past four years. I don't think it's racism. How else do you explain the other southern states that shifted blue?

You're right.

I just didn't want to believe it. Is there another explanation than the one you identified? Only other I could think of was Palin appealing to the evangelicals in those states, but that can't account for the lurch to the right in those states.

I honestly can't think of anything. The anti-Obama (as opposed to pro-McCain) vote was huge out here, and it was almost universally couched in subtly or explicitly racist rhetoric. I think a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't bother to vote showed up just in hopes of keeping the negroes in their place. Seriously.

It's impossible to know, though, because in exit polling nobody's going to admit something like that.
