Default What is the role of a prophet?

If we are supposed to ask God for confirmation regarding what prophets teach us, why don't we just ask God directly about what we are supposed to do?

Wouldn't He be willing to make His will known to us without using an earthly, imperfect messenger?

Well, when it comes to major decisions regarding the church as a whole, that's where the Prophet comes into play.

Asking God for personal confirmation that what the Prophet is teaching is a good way to strengthen our belief that the Prophet really is the Prophet, rather than finding out for sure that he's teaching us the right things. If we receive confirmation that he is the Prophet, then what he's teaching us is right, IMO.

I'm not really a believer, but it was always my understanding that the Prophet could receive revelation as it pertains to the church as a whole. The individual member is able to receive personal revelation to guide them in their own life. I haven't heard of any situation where a prophet has tried to overrule someone's personal revelation.
