Oh yeah? Watch this:

Total time is 2.36 seconds. One-half of that is the time to get to its peak height - 1.18 secs. Gravity deceleration is 32 ft/sec/sec.
Initial velocity = 32 ft/sec/sec * 1.18 secs = 37.76 ft/sec.
Peak height = Initial height + (Initial velocity * time to peak) - (1/2 * 32 ft/sec/sec * time ^2)
=6 + (37.76*1.18) - (16*1.18 ^2)
=6 + 44.56 - 22.28
=28.28 ft

Spreadsheets are for sissies.

Usually PAC 10 officials come up with phantom holding penalties, botched replays (see Oklahoma game), phantom face masks (BYU vs UCLA). It was a miracle. I bet they get fired for allowing BYU to win.
heads. They forgot who was playing who. Just goes to show it was a correct call. They have been conditioned to call that particular penalty that it was just a natural call. Good call. Give the ball to the ref or drop it in the end zone. Kick the extra point and you're tied.

Not BYU's fault. Shouldn't be punished by the pollsters.

15 feet off the ground is only like 9 feet above his head, which is nothing. Commentators are saying it went 25 feet up, which is high enough to knock a child off of a 3rd story balcony.

I thought he said 15 feet from his arm. That'd put it at about 21 feet.

I was at the game, in the BYU section, not far from where he threw the ball. That thing shot right up. I'd have guessed somewhere between 20 to 30 feet straight up in the air-- no flip over the shoulder, or slip of the ball. Any argument that what he did was not a violation of that rule is ludicrous.

Whether you like the rule or not is another matter, but as the rule is written, the refs made the right call.

The thing everyone is missing is the fact that NCAA sat down all the referees this year, showed a video on inappropriate celebrations, called out many referees by name, and made this a major point of emphasis this season. They were very specific and said that this is in no way a "judgement" call, it is a rule like breaking the huddle with 12 guys or a false start, this not a judgement call.

The refs, Tyrone Willingham and the head of the NCAA have all said that the referee had no choice but to make the call he did. Whether the rule is a good one or not is a different story but based on all of the emphasis put on it you cant really argue.

Having not watched the video showing the full trajectory, I assumed that the ball returned to the ground, not to his helmet. In which case, the 2.36 seconds is total time in the air, involving an asymmetric parabolic arc, and more complicated math than that sissy stuff you just posted via cut-and-paste.

Neener neener.
