Windows Vista sucks
So my motherboard on my 3 year old Dell laptop crapped out on me. In a pinch and in need of a new laptop I configured one online only to find out it'd ship in 5 weeks. So I broke down and bought a new one. I have been transferring everything over from my old hard drive (bought an enclosure) and Vista is giving me fits. It asks permission for everything. I am ready to wipe this thing clean and install XP on this thing.

Yeah I've disabled it. The windows easy transfer though is not easy at all. I can't get it to transfer from hard drive enclosure. If I try and drag files it tells me permission denied.

Try Linux. I haven't tried it yet myself.

I hated Vista. I bought a copy of XP on eBay for about $135.

Now I really hate Vista. For some reason I couldn't just pull off the files off my old hard drive and copy them onto my new computer. I have to keep changing the ownership of the files because even as an admin it's not giving me permission to even view them. Anyway, while trying to copy over my documents which include all my music, photos, and papers I somehow corrupted the file. Now there is just a shortcut that goes nowhere and "My Documents" can't be found. My wife was near tears when I told her as I've lost all our daughter's pictures (some were backed up on discs, but not all).
That said, can anyone recommend a good data recovery software program or reasonably priced company that could pull these off for me? I have probably 20 GB of music and another 4 GB of pictures I need and a few important word docs? Also, the corrupted file is on 2.5" IDE in an enclosure w/ USB from my old laptop that had a bad motherboard if that makes a difference.

You can run Office 2007 with Windows XP and it works fine. That is what I do.

I just received notice from our IT dept that I need to bring my laptop in before October for the upgrade to Vista.
I have yet to hear a single good thing about it. I am dreading the switch.

I like it a lot. Took a bit of getting used to but I now prefer it over XP.
