How any one believes we no longer live in a racist society is beyond me.

I am shocked this sort of behavior still exists. It must exist in the poverty stricken subsets of urban society, as it does arise in normal society.

My son brought up the subject of racism as we were traveling to soccer, through some of our ethnic neighborhoods. He remarked how many of the kids of various ethnic backgrounds were cruel towards blacks. For example, he stated several asian and latino kids mocked a black kid whom he stood up for. He also noted that if a white kid made any of the remarks the asian or latino kids had made, they'd be severely disciplined and asked somewhat naively, "Why does every race hate white people?" Explaining the complexities of race relations is not an easy thing, other than to explain the extremes one witnesses are not the norm.

That's just it. Nobody is saying that there aren't people with racist views and convictions in society. But to assert that those are the norm, and that society in general is racist, is inaccurate, IMO.

These racist people don't walk around in little bubbles. They are a product of our society, and not merely an abberation as many want to believe.

Racism is systematic, pervasive and unfortunately at many levels of governing tolerable. It is one of the greatest failings of north American society.

Sure it is systematic. Which is why it takes time to eradicate. However, My father is less racist than his father, and I am less racist than my father. I fully expect my children to be less racist than me.

I believe you're too provincial in limiting the problems of racisim to North America. In my travels of the Seven Seas, it exists in all lands, every country and tongue. Wherever diversity exists, discrimination on the basis of that diversity can be found.

I disagree it is necessarily systematic. It is cultural first, and culture arises first and foremost in the family and extended family.

Our government doesn't promote. Now, certain segments of minority advocates unwittingly promote it, but show me any public pronouncement, other than by some black advocates, where it is taught in the schools, promoted by government or business. You will not be able to. It is preached in some ignorant homes of the uneducated.

You say this as if racism is unique to North America.

That is laughable.

Does racism exist? Of course it does. And it always will. But I think as a whole, we are much much less racist than our grandparents and parents were 50 years ago.

It's comforting to know that you're not quite as racist as your grandpa.

I'm not racist.

But feel free to continue saying I am. I really don't care what you think.

The progress we've made in 50 years is apparently beyond you as well.
