I do think there is a cultural issue here within the black community on this. A small part of my practice is criminal defense and my anecdotal experience is that no matter what a black person has done, when I talk to them (of course generalizing here but I would say 80% of the time or better) they are focused on why the process or the charge is somehow unfair. They are being singled out, other people were doing worse things, the police are out to get them, the police are racist, the prosecutor is out to get them etc. And you can't talk them out of it. I can;t even tell you how many have said to me "I know how it works in the back rooms around here, who do we need to pay off." When I explain that just isn't the case, it just confirms t many of them that I am part of the conspiracy. This just is not nearly as true with other races. Latinos for example, for the most part, usually fess right up and want their punishment over quickly. Whites above all will do anything not to go to jail and that is their big concern.

I don't share that to say "blacks are inferior" somehow. It has just become very clear to me that within that community there is a pervasive belief that the police, the government etc are out to get them and they view the world through that lens. It is analogous to how so many LDS are prone to seeing "anti-LDS" sentiment when what they are really seeing is ignorance.

I have sometimes thought that was as LDS have a persecution complex because, in fact, at points in the past and occasionally now, we were in fact persecuted. Multiply that by two or three orders of magnitude and you begin to understand the "black" view of society. They probably come by it rightfully, but the inability to see cause and effect in the world hinders them as a group.

I am not surprised in the least that many in the black community think Vick is being picked on. When you explain to them that the dog fighting evidence was discovered in a search for something completely unrelated and the can't just ignore evidence of other crimes, it does little to change what they already know in their hearts.
