Echoing past findings, new federal research has found Utah has the nation's highest percentage of adults who report feeling "serious psychological distress" over the past year. At 14.4 percent, the rate was significantly higher than the lowest state, Hawaii, at 8.8 percent. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration data released Thursday is based on 2005 and 2006 surveys of 136,110 Americans. It is the most up-to-date data available. Other results:
* Utah has the lowest level of underage drinking. Only 21.5 percent of those surveyed from age 12 to 20 reported using alcohol in the past month, in contrast to 38.3 percent in Vermont.
* Utah has the lowest percentage of people age 12 and older who used marijuana in the prior month, at 4.3 percent. Vermont was the highest in the nation, at 9.7 percent.
* Utah also stood out for its low tobacco use. Among residents age 12 and older, 22.1 percent reported using tobacco the month before. By contrast, 40.6 percent of West Virginia residents reported such use.
