I worked as staff at a teen sex offender treatment program for a while. There the program consisted of single and group therapy. They'd have to admit what they did in a time line of all their offenses. They have to learn to identify when their sexual energy is too high and learn how to cope with it in positive ways. As they were farther along in treatment they'd get opportunities to interact with the public under supervision (such as going ice skating or to a comedy club) and would have to use their coping strategies.

I did a search of my own zip code here in OC, plus one other.

I then did a zip code of just the city where my in-laws live in Utah.

There were more registered sex offenders in that one city than in my entire zip code and neighboring zip code. And it wasn't even close.

Yikes.
I had to try it myself. Anywhere from 6 - 14 in a few zip codes in the Portland area. Tried SLC and Provo zips -- 59 and 71. And I'm happy my daughter got accepted to the Y for this fall??

I am just guessing here but could it be that each state uses different criteria for defining "sex offender"?

For example, there was a streaker at a HS football game in Provo a couple of years ago. He was a HS-age kid pulling a prank that was very common back in the 70's. He got caught and I hear that he is now a registered sex offender. Not excusing what he did, but that seems a bit harsh. Especially for a juvenile.

This is definitely a factor, although you can peruse the sex offender database to see exactly what the offenses were. Most are legitimate L&L, copulation, etc.

I really think my theory holds water....the NIMBY issue is going to be resolved in communities that are not politically organized, lack social awareness, and are basically, for the most part, complaint to authority.

It is cheap and easy to house these guys in Utah County because nobody is going to put up much of a fuss, plus it is close enough to where parole officers and counselors can monitor them without having to drive really far away.

Thanks for that info.

I have to admit that I don't understand how anyone can let their sexual energy (another term for libido?) control him/her, especially to the point of committing offenses.

Then again, I'm Mr. Low when it comes to that, so anything higher than "maybe" is out of control for me.

Many of those kids came from troubled backgrounds (abused, foster kids, parents divorcing ect.) and got in to porn at a young age and excessive masturbation. I'm not an expert but it seemed like they offended to have something over which they controlled. Virtually all of their offenses were against much younger kids or perhaps handicapped kids.

Sad.

I don't know if any other word describes that.

That's scary in such a small zip code.
84121? I checked our neighborhood and didn't find any thankfully.

Maybe so. I was going off the title: Utah's Sex offenders and their victims.
