Blowing up the spy satellite
9 minute video of Phil Plait explaining what the deal is the spy satellite being blown up. Apparently, it might be happening tonight during the lunar eclipse.

I think it is likely a cover (sort of) for a weapons system test. THe military saw this thing start falling from the sky and thought "excellent, a great way to test the system without threatening anyone."

If it happens tonight, I want to see the explosion. That would be cool.

He discusses that possibility in the video. I've learned elsewhere that there's only a 10-second window tonight, as well as for the next 8-9 days, so I'm not sure what the odds are of it happening tonight.

As a kid I always liked lighting things on fire or blowing stuff up. So if the military gets to blow something up that was going to blow up any way, what the hell.

There are fewer things more impressive than a full lunar eclipse. We'll have to wait until 2010 for it to happen again, though it will be about another millennium for us to see the triangle that can be seen tonight as formed by the moon, Saturn and Regulus.

This is how I feel as well. And, if it scares some wusses, so be it.
