Default Max Hall, the Princess among all BYU Quarterbacks

It was quite funny to me that the announcers of the BYU game said that Anae said that BYU fans would not appreciate Max Hall until 10 years had passed.

Because BYU will be so terrible that we will long for the golden period that was Max Hall?

Who knows.

But one thing we do know--Max Hall never captured the imagination of BYU fans. There was something about Max that was just unlikeable, unworthy, and frankly, forgettable. All the wins, yards, touchdowns, notwithstanding.

Maybe it was the sense, that if you really met and knew Max, you would not like him.

Max followed a somewhat beloved quarterback--Beck. Who suffered through some poor performances at the beginning of his career, had poor confidence, and had to develop confidence in his abilities.

Max was the opposite. He had early success, great confidence. He was that QB that cougarboard fatties loved--"why can't we have a QB who gets fired up, who gets in peoples' face??!!" Great confidence became over-confidence. Getting in peoples faces because a narcissist that was not a true team leader. Great promise gave way to let-downs in big games, and the sense that he really had not improved and grown the way we would have hoped.

There's no question about it--as good as Max has been, he has been a disappointment. Among the kings and princes of BYU quarterbacks, we have the princess. Royalty, but not quite what we wanted.

It would mean a lot to Max and the other seniors if he could win against Utah, and win a (meaningless) bowl game. I don't think it changes BYU fans' opinions, but it would be nice.....

One thing that does not fall on Max, is that he has been burdened by a coach who has some of the same flaws, but in a different personality package. Bronco has increased fans expectations through his bluster (yes, I am calling it that). He has shown a lot of promise. But man, if the smell is not off that rose.....Bronco has been shown to be clearly a notch below Whittingham and Patterson. It's hard to truly acknowledge and articulate this disappointment, and as such, it falls (unfairly) on Max's shoulders.

Max is a good player, but it seems like he never got better. Maybe it's the coaching.

Max is a good QB and has improved every year (remember all those blindside sacks/fumbles as a soph?). He's suffered this year from an inexperienced o line and probably unrealistic fan expectations. Beat Utah and win the Veg and he's remembered fondly, just like JoBeck.
