this is a guy i know he raced in buffalo springs yesterday, here are his results. Are these good? This guy trains a ton and he wants to qualify for Hawaii i am just wondering how good these are? or if he has a long ways to go.

A couple of questions.

How long has he been doing it?

Is this his first half?

With that stated, his swim is a little slow, his bike is his best event and his run needs work. His bike time shows potential as Buffalo Springs is a tough bike course.

The 30-34 age group is very tough, and he would need to improve by about 40 minutes to qualify. On a good day, even I beat that time. (I'm nothing special and several places away from making Hawaii, in a more mature age group). Congratulate him all the same.

On a bad day anything is possible.

My times at that even would go, 30 minute swim, 2:40 bike and 1:50 to 1:59 run. I'm trying to get my run under 1:50, but haven't succeeded.

However, if this is his try, it is a decen first effort and he should improve with continued effort.

In that age group, he needs a 28 swim, a 2:28 bike and a 1:35 run.

I dont think he has been doing it for to long, it is a half iron man, he claims that he gets stronger the longer he goes so he is better doing a full ironman.

I was just curious if those were good times or if they were anywhere close to qualifying for hawaii. I am going to look up his other times and see if this was just a bad day.

At ironman distance, he needs to break ten hours most times to qualify. So cut that in half and one must break five, usually 4:40. At my age, slower times will do, but I haven't qualified yet, after a couple of years. My brother qualifies almost every year.

So if you qualify will you go? Also does your brother go every year?

He didn't race this year, but he went last year.

I agree with this part.

Junkie, IMO the best question to ask your friend is, "Hey, how'd it go? Were you happy with your time?" Then he'll give you a sense of how it went, whether he's improving his times or not, Whether he had a good day or was flat. One day's result may not give the big picture.

I'm no real triathlete, but that's my two cents.

Triathlons are about lifestyle and fitness, and only the nerdy Type AAA personalities care too much about results.

A healthy, somewhat self-absorbed lifestyle, is its purpose. It will extend one's life.

A triathlete is also his or her own worst critic. Sometimes we take the fun out of it, because we as a banker don't finish 299th instead of 330th. One thing I do, when people inevitably pass me is to congratulate them on a great effort. I cheer them for being there.

I never congratulate the ones who pass me (and trust me there are many). I curse them under my breath as they wave and say, "Hang in there."

Grr.

My favorite phrase, "On your left."
