Default Smoker Recommendations

After about four years of faithful service, my smoker went kaput the other day. It was an electric water-smoker kind of like this one:

The heating element burned out on me. I suppose I could buy a new element, but I am thinking getting an entirely new unit. I have enjoyed the simplicity and ease of use, but I am hoping to get a few opinions. Any arguments out there for going with either a charcoal unit or a propane unit?
