My problem with a one year supply is that I have nowhere to put it. My home is about 1400 square feet and I have 4 kids. I have a large garage but I live in one of the hottest cities in CA. We've already had a few days well over 100 degrees this May and we will consistently be in the 100's throughout the summer. This puts garage temps up into the 120's regularly.

So, I've got about a 3 month supply tucked throughout the house. Short of building an underground bunker I have no idea how I could put 9 more months worth of food in my home without it spoiling. Any ideas would be appreciated.

On a somewhat related note, my back lawn died for the 2nd time in a year. This time I decided that I was going to do something different with it. I've made it into a vegetable garden (not done yet, but getting there). It looks nice and should be pretty productive. I'm kind of excited about it as we haven't ever had a large garden before.

Short of putting your bed on blocks and stacking it under the beds, there's not much else you can do. If you have an attic, you can install flooring there and stack it there (my sister did this in the attic of her townhouse, but didn't put food supply there. I don't know what sort of temperatures you'd be looking at).

The church website recommended keeping your food at 75F or cooler....

My neighbors put up a shed to store it, a cheap one, and in the summer they have a swamp cooler out there tha was also inexpensive. I think he said the whole setup was under $500.

Now they are diehards about this stuff, so I dont know if you want to go that far. But thats what they did.

attic would be a bad idea in Texas.

What about cellars?

I like the idea of putting it under your bed.

If it was truly important, you would find a way.

I suppose you could insulate & board up the ceiling in the attic as well - you could probably even extend the A/C ducting, depending on ease of access....

But yeah, attic in the summer would probably get pretty toasty.


There's a company here in Utah that specializes in basically digging a cellar under your garage. They primarily put in basketball courts & such there, but you could probably do it for food storage. Obviously, that would involve a very healthy investment

This is our main issue. No room to store stuff, so not going to worry about it.

Even if we had a huge bag of wheat, I wouldnt know what to do with it anyway. do you put it in the microwave?

First off, you don't want store wheat in plastic bags. It's easy for them to be compromised. Which happened with my parents. So the wheat was thrown away in the compost.

Then, amazingly enough, we had a rodent explosion in our backyard.
