I like placing the transparency sheet that is original Mormonism over the transparency sheet that is theoretical physics and seeing what compares and what contrasts.

An interesting exercise is to place Mormonism, spec. D&C 88, over superstring theory or M-theory (I can't pretend to have a sophisticated understanding of it).

I've been watching some shows on the Science channel about Hawking, black holes, the big bang, string theory, etc. It's fascinating.

I recommended a well-known book for the reading group about string theory and you said it was outdated. (You should have just reiterated the policy that all you read is books by and about Mormons.)

actually the way Hawking frames his research sounds very much like a Mormon missionary: where did we come from, where are we, and where are we going?

Even his ideas about the big bang have been framed around the idea of whether outside intervention was necessary (i.e. God), and he even makes cracks about having been told by the Vatican that it is not correct to study the universe before the big bang, "glad they didn't know about my research at the conference, because if they did they might have locked me up like Galileo."

The origins of the universe, man, and God are inseparable.

these questions are the preoccupation of religion. That theoretical physics can tackle these questions is a relatively recent phenomenon.

These have been important questions to almost anyone with consciusness, certainly any developed civilization. Classical philosophy was the first discipline to adress them and even try to answer them like we do, even more than Judaism.
