I suppose if you researched the professional literature you will find a multitude of reasons and answers.

Some women find safety in nurturing a child in a bad marriage. Nature endowed many women with a need to nurture. Some will extend that to their husbands and many more extend it to their children. So perhaps some elements of safety are created, even if it is probably an unsound decision, through the conceiving and rearing of children.

But I imagine there exists a host of other reasons. for example, if a woman is unsure of herself, but thinks something is wrong with her and that if she produces offspring, it might "fix" something in her mate's eyes. There are many substitution patterns that may arise.

The bottom line is many women desire to have children, and the circumstances of being married or not being married are not always at the forefront of a woman when conceiving.

The drive to reproduce, have posterity, leave your mark on the world.

Even successful intelligent attractive women will sometimes settle for this purpose.
