I saw a performance by Prince (with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" that was an amazing solo.

In the rock area I submit two that are better than this.

1) Eddie Hazel: Maggot Brain
2) Prince: Joy in Repitition from his live album. Sounds like he is channeling Eddie Hazel.

Here is the Prince solo. Prince does not get nearly the respect he deserves as a guitarist.

Agreed; however, if I had to nominate anything, it would be Peter Frampton on guitar in "Do You Feel Like We Do" on Frampton Comes Alive.

Clearly, none of you have seen "Crossroads." Granted, it's Ralph Macchio pretending to shred, but if you watch the end where the two guitarists battle it out with alternating solos, and watch the winning solo (performed in actuality by Stevie Vai), you will know the greatest guitar solo ever performed.

Anyone else seen it?

Sure, I watchred the silly movie just for that scene. STeve Vai is an awesome talent, but we still need to define the elements we are looking for. Stevie V. can be amazing, but if you want an impressive and soulful guitar experience (and want to hear the guy the crossroads idea is about) listen to Robert Johnson. On some of his stuff ou will swear there mus eb two guys playing, unless he did sell his soul to the devil.

Yes I saw Crossroads, but that is certainly not what I got out of that movie. I seem to remember in the end that Britney gave up her virgniity after driving cross country with her friends. I don't remember any guitar music, but I do remember Britney sitting with the guy who deflowered her at the piano singing the song she wrote "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman."
