Haven't read this yet. Putting it here as a reminder.

Great article. There are a few Mormon physicianesses here in DC. Wonder what they think.

We should be encouraging towards the LDS girls in our midst who aspire higher education.
That way we can be part of the solution and not the problem. |

It has been a long time since LDS were socially progressive. You will only see reactionary behavior.

Tina Fey's insight sheds light some of the causes of the lonely world of female premeds:

An interesting observation within my own family.
My sister's daughters come from a very pious and conservative perspective, but both of the older two will be unmarked and pursuing advanced degrees in Arizona.

There was a female BYU grad who went to med school here while I was a resident. She was terrible. Absolutely terrible. I wanted to be proud but couldn't. It wasn't that she lacked intelligence, but she just couldn't handle the profession. That said, one could argue that a Mormon female going into medicine is from a truly disadvantaged background.
From an institution that has produced almost zero family docs (nothing to be proud of) and doesn't even have a family medicine rotation for medical students, two Mormons in the last several years managed to underachieve enough to go that route. Unsurprisingly, they have reduced the number of BYU grads that they admit. I'm not saying that family docs are underachievers. I love a good family doc. But there are people who choose a specialty and there are people who have no other option because they are simply bad at what they do. |
