We went to Aliso Creek. Weather was perfect, pretty big surf, not too many people. The kids loved it (I think the creek portion was a bigger hit than the actual ocean). I loved it too. IMO there is nothing more relaxing than to watch the surf roll in and out for hours. Thanks for the recommendation.

Awesome. Aliso is a nice gig. Did your kids dig in the creek for stuff?

next time out we need to get you up on a board. Promise that you will never want to sit on the sand and watch the surf ever again.

You know what? My family and I have lived there since 1986 (my senior year of high school). I have yet to attempt to surf, and to be honest, I really don't have the desire. It doesn't sound enjoyable to me. I'd much prefer to snorkel or scuba dive (neither of which I really do, but intend to take up some day). I do enjoy sitting on the sand with a book, though.

go once, catch a wave, you will be hooked for life.

Surfing's the source.

Yeah, they were digging all over, didn't find much stuff, a couple of seashells. My two year old just chased seagulls and pigeons the whole time, it was pretty cute.

I actually have been surfing a couple of times at Santa Cruz when I lived in the Bay Area. Longboard. Fun stuff, although I wasn't very good. Tried a shortboard in Maui and I sucked - had no idea what I was doing. I was thinking we need to spend more time on the beach next time - at least a couple of days. Maybe next time you can pry your way out of the office and give me a couple of pointers.

Anyway, the day we were there, no one was really surfing because the waves were breaking too close to the shore. They were doing that thing where they run down the beach throw a board out in front of them and then meet the incoming wave. Not sure what that is called but it looked like fun.

Skimboarding.

Way fun. Think of skateboarding on the sand meets surfing on the water.

Not meant for the meek, as your bones shatter if you pitch into the sand.

Laguna Beach is the world captial of skimboarding. Aliso is a good skimming beach because the shore is a nice long sandbed with a gradual slope.

If they were staying on the sand, they had wooden boards. If they were able to go out over water for a bit and carve, then they had foamies.

You can borrow those next time, too.

This past summer (July), the annual world championships were held at Aliso...right where you were. That is a great beach.
